Causes of varicose veins during pregnancy

The main reason for the development of varicose veins during pregnancy is the failure of the venous valves that provide reverse blood flow from the bottom of the body to the heart. This occurs mainly due to the fact that during pregnancy the volume of blood increases and vessels and valves therefore experience a large load. In addition, hormonal changes among pregnant women as a result, decrease the tonus of vascular walls.

Individual factors influencing the development of varicose veins include intensively growing fetus, which, in some cases, can pinch blood vessels, contributing to blood stagnation.

Risk factors for varicose veins during pregnancy include:

  • Heredity related to the insufficient work of the venous valves.
  • The presence of multiple pregnancy.
  • Large weight of fetus.
  • Repeated pregnancy (risk of developing varicose veins during the second pregnancy increased by 60% aand by 80% during the third one) .
  • Too intense weight gain by a pregnant woman.
  • Sedentary lifestyle.
  • Sharp change in climatic conditions.

  • Cramps and pain in the calf muscles .
  • Occurrence of deformation of the peripheral blood vessels (the occurance of nodules, enlarged veins and so on) .
  • The above mentioned changes may occur with veins, which are located not only on the legs, but also in groin, in anus (hemorrhoids), sometimes in uterus and vagina.
