Laboratory Tests For Lupus Part II

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate

ESR measures the rate of red blood cells going toward the underside. When inflammation exists, blood proteins accumulate more rapidly as sediment and stick along and fall. The more rapidly theys fall, the bigger the inflammation.

Laboratory Tests For Lupus Part II

Usage: ESR may be used for assurance. Lupus action could be indicated by inflammation. This evaluation could be employed to track inflammation, which may signal changes in the activity or reaction to treatment.

Limits of the evaluation: The ESR isn't unique to lupus. Since there are many causes including disease, for an optimistic outcome, the evaluation isn't diagnostic. Nor can it differentiate an illness and a lupus flare. In addition, the amount and lupus disease activity does not directly correlate. So it's always useless .

Complete Blood Cell Count

CBC is a test to quantify amounts of cells which are different.

Usage: Abnormalities including white and red blood cells, can happen in people with lupus. This can be related to disease, or the lupus treatments. Leukopenia, a decline in the amount of white cells, is in nearly 50% of those with lupus. A low count, or thrombocytopenia, occurs among 50% of those with lupus, at the same time. Doctors may use this evaluation to track these issues that are possibly serious.

Limits of the evaluation: Many other health conditions may lead to abnormalities. So the evaluation by CBC) isn't unique to your lupus analysis.

Chemistry Panel

It is a test to evaluate liver function and kidney function. In addition, it gives advice and triglyceride levels.

Usage: Abnormalities may suggest the progression of complications. They also may come from treatments for such illnesses as raised glucose levels, liver and kidney disease, high cholesterol levels.

Urine Tests

Physicians use such tests to diagnose and track the outcomes of lupus. These evaluations contain the following:

Measuring Glomerular Rate of Filtration and Proteinuria. This evaluation quantifies how successful blood is filtered by kidneys to take out the waste products. It's done on urine collected in a 24 hr interval.

Creatinine/Protein Ratio: This evaluation is performed on an urine sample that was one time. It is measuring the protein reduction, which can be an indication of kidney function.

Urinalysis can be used in checking for kidney disease. The existence of white and red cells, protein and cellular casts all may suggest kidney disease.
