Endoscopy With A Video Capsule

In this video from the AGA, Dr. Cynthia Yoshida explains what you can expect before, during and after capsule endoscopy. More information on capsule endoscopy is available at ww.gastro.org/patient.
It allows for more precise, quicker analysis of digestive disorders.

Video endoscopy with capsule can be done in pediatric patients -- with no microcameras being stuck inside the gastrointestinal tract, scientists reported.

Endoscopy With A Video Capsule

The Advantages Of Video Capsule

The concern in having the mini-cameras in attempting to diagnose digestive disorders is as the device traverses the digestive tract, necessitating operation to remove the apparatus that it can get stuck at some point. To prevent that event, the gastrointestinal gives the kids an imaging-traceable, self-dissolving apparatus -- a patency capsule -- if this type of device will make it to discover.

When kids have instances where the patency apparatus is trapped, doctors don't perform capsule endoscopy. Because of this, a 0% retention rate has been reached.

Video Capsule Challenges

Experts said it is occasionally a challenge to get these devices . Kids of the age 5 have a hard time swallowing it. After age 5 they may consume it, but a few of the kids -- even up to teen years -- refuse to consume it. The patient population for the present study ranges in age 2.5-21.5 years.

91 people were able to consume these devices at work setting. For others, the apparatus was set using a delivery system. For 25 patients, laryngoscopic support has been required to get the camera. Positioning using that technique that is new was successful in 24 of the instances.

It can take 8 hours of video and about 50K individual images of its journey, respectively, broadcasting the images to a wireless recorder on the belt from the capsule. The advice in the recorder is subsequently brought back to work, where it's downloaded to the computer which converts the graphics into a video.

Many of the kids like to see the video once it's prepared. It takes nearly half an hour to finish the procedure.

This Is The Future

Experts exemplified patient direction was affected by use of the apparatus in some studies that were gastrointestinal. For instance, in 15, the patient direction was altered in kids under treatment for Crohn's when the video revealed that present treatment had not been ideal.

On the foundation of the capsule endoscopy findings, biologic treatment was pioneered in 8/15 patients. Following studies revealed healing of ulceration due to Crohn's.

In 7, small bowel polyps were detected of 51 kids with suspected celiac disease that experienced the process, resulting in disorder identification that was more particular.

The apparatus also exemplified duodenal windsock diverticulum -- a non-usual malformation that needed surgical correction, and was also used in analysis of IBD, identification of polyps.
