The human body contains 25 milligrams of macro-element Iodine (I). The thyroid gland contains 15 mg of them. The rest is concentrated in the kidneys, liver, ovaries, prostate, hair, skin, nails.

Iodine occurs in nature in the inorganic and organic compounds. It can also be found in the free state in the air, falling into the water and soil from atmospheric deposition.

Iodine Daily Requirements

  • Younger children: 60-70 mg.
  • Adolescent children: 100-150 mcg.
  • Grown man: 100-150 mcg.

Daily requirement for iodine increases during intense physical exertion, pregnancy and breastfeeding (200-300 mg.) or inhibition of thyroid function.

Worth knowing that organic iodine contained in seaweed is better absorbed by the body and it lingers longer than iodine-containing drugs .

How Iodine Influences the Body

Iodine has a significant influence on the human body. It is an important component of the thyroid gland, as a member of its hormones: thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Hormones contain iodine, stimulate growth and development of the body, regulate the exchange of heat and energy, enhance the oxidation of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

These hormones stimulate the breakdown of cholesterol, are involved in the regulation of the cardiovascular system, important for the health and development of the central nervous system.

Iodine is an immunostimulant and bio-stimulator, preventing the formation of blood clots and blood clotting.

Iodine In the Foods

Macro-element iodine is rich in seafood: seaweed, fish, shrimp, squid, mussels.

Percentage of iodine content in other products depends on its availability in the soil. Thus, a good source of iodine may be:

  • wheat and buckwheat groats,
  • vegetables (tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, beets),
  • fruits and fruit (apples, cherries, grapes, apricot, plum),
  • dairy products (milk, curd, cheese ).

Altogether human for the whole life gets about one teaspoon of iodine. This trace mineral is needed in minute amounts, but must be ingested regularly - every day.
