Stem cells will save eyesight
Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic, progressive disease suring which there occurs a damage of the central area of the retina. This disease is the leading cause of vision loss among people over 65 years, while an effective means for curing this disease does not exist. Perhaps it will be invented very soon.
Scientists at the Medical Center Cedar Sinai conducted a study on rordents. Experts transformed cells of adult human skin into powerful pluripotent stem cells. Then the researchers created neuronal progenitor cells from them. They were injected into the eyes of rodent.
Timely injection of stem cells helped the rats to maintain visual acuity within 130 days, the whic is equivalent to 16 years of human life. In the future, experts plan to carry out tests on humans suffering from age-related macular degeneration. Scientists hope that stem cells will be able to win a lot of diseases.
