The scientists from the Institute of Food Research found that polyphenols from green tea and apples inhibit the activity of the molecule VEGF, which can cause atherosclerosis. Also, the molecule appears to be a target for some anti-cancer drugs.
VEGF is participates in blood vessels formation a.k.a angiogenesis. Angiogenesis plays an essential role in the development of tumors and atherosclerotic plaque rupture occurance. And the rupture often leads to heart attacks and strokes.
In a study experts exmined human blood vessel cells. They found that low concentrations of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) got from green tea and apple procyanidin affect the function of VEGF molecule. And it has been known before that polyphenols reduce the activity of VEGF. However, researchers discovered that polyphenols interact with the molecule immediately after the fall in blood directly for the first time.
